Review: Maybelline the Mega Plush Volum' Express Mascara in Blackest Black

Thursday, 12 September 2013

I'm always on the look-out for a new mascara to try out because they are all so very different and it can be fun to experiment with dramatic or natural lashes from time to time. Generally speaking, I'm also usually drawn to Maybelline mascaras for their wet formulas and innovative wands and cute packaging.

What I found particularly intriguing about the Mega Plush was the "Revolutionary Gel-Mousse Formula" which promised "Mega Volume" with "No Brittle Feel". I was also hoping that this mascara might prove better than my favourite the Falsies Black Drama in the smudge department. Though, I was a bit wary of the giant flexible wand with its sporadic bristles.

However, upon first use, it was love. This mascara is like none I've ever tried in that it coats every single lash and doesn't clump at all! Your lashes are perfectly separate but volumised and lengthened beautifully. This gives a dramatic look that still maintains an air of the natural which I adore. The true test was the wearing power. I wore this mascara all day [including a trip to the zoo] and there was no smudging, smearing, or flaking! It looked exactly the same as the moment I put it on. Plus, while it definitely feels like I'm wearing mascara, my eyelashes aren't stiff and irritating like they can be with other mascaras that I've tried.

Don't get me wrong, though, the wand is HUGE, easily covering the length of your eye. Unexpectedly, it also has a rather unique shape. It has three flat sides so that the bristles form a sort of tapered triangular prism which is lovely for the top lashes but makes getting the little bottom ones a bit of a challenge. It's also very flexible, as advertised, which I don't see as an advantage. The bend in the wand makes it hard to get a good grip on the lashes and coat completely from root to tip without covering your eyelid, as well. Then, there's the bristles themselves: I generally prefer plastic bristles because I feel they disperse product more effectively but this wand has very sporadic wire bristles which is simply something I'm not used to!

Even with such an unusual wand, though, I really love this mascara and I'm going to thoroughly enjoy using it as the weather warms up down here.

Review: Nivea Visage Pure & Natural Moisturising Day Cream

Tuesday, 10 September 2013

I was on the search for a new moisturiser that had real benefits for my skin but wasn't full of fake and harmful ingredients. That's when I came across the Pure & Natural line from the drugstore classic, Nivea. I hadn't tried a whole lot of products from Nivea before but I thought this would be a good place to try again!

The Moisturising Day Cream is formulated for normal to combination skin but I find it works quite well on my normal/dry skin. It's packaged in a small glass pot with a plastic screw top. It feels nice and substantial but glass is never great for travelling. I'm also pretty unfamiliar with pot moisturisers, generally buying squeeze bottles, but I suppose you get used to the products you have! Though, I like the 50mL size of the product.
The particular allure of the Pure & Natural line is that the products don't contain parabens, silicones, colourants or mineral oils. This makes the product more effective and better for your skin which is always a good thing! 95% of the ingredients come from natural origins including organic aloe vera and argan oil to sooth and moisturise the skin.

This is probably my favourite moisturiser that I've used in a while. It's a thick cream consistency that doesn't irritate any of the dry patches I have. Using it twice a day after cleansing my face, the Moisturising Day Cream leaves my skin nice and soft. It also has quite a nice smell; it's sweet and fresh at the same time.

Review: Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Pore Scrub

Thursday, 5 September 2013

I'm always looking for more natural based skincare products in the drugstore so I was quite excited when Neutrogena released its new Naturals line. This line is fantastic because it doesn't contain any harsh chemicals, parabens, sulphates, petrochemicals, dyes, or phthalates. None of them have been tested on animals, either. The Purifying Pore Scrub contains 94% naturally derived ingredients and is package in post consumer recycled plastic.

The range is also pretty extensive, including a Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover, Purifying Pore Scrub, Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Moisturiser, Lip Balm, and Face and Body Bar.

I've reviewed the Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover here if you're interested in reading more about that product.

Now, because the facial cleanser didn't have any sort of exfoliation, I decided to also pick up the Purifying Pore Scrub to use in conjunction with the cleanser.

So far, I'm not overly impressed by this product but it's not horrible. The consistency is quite thin and runny with a lot of very fine beads for exfoliating. The beads are so fine that this product is safe for everyday use but I prefer to use it about twice a week to keep my skin nice and smooth.

While in use the product doesn't foam up at all but remains more of a thin gel consistency. It also has a strong green apple scent like the Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover. I like the scent because it's quite refreshing and doesn't linger on the skin but be wary if you're sensitive to fragrance.

This is definitely a gentle product and you shouldn't expect any heavy duty exfoliating but if you want something for everyday use then this might be your kind of exfoliator. It's also great if you're usually sensitive to or try to avoid the harsh chemicals used in most drugstore skincare products. So far, I'm really glad Neutrogena has provided us with a more natural option!

August Beauty Favourites!

Tuesday, 3 September 2013

This month I thought I might try something new and move my Favourites over to my blog as apposed to my usual video format. If you're unfamiliar with favourites, this is a list of a products that I've been using in the past month and really enjoying. It's a good way to find out about new products and even tried-and-true favourites, as well. So, without further adieu, I'll just jump right in!

Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in 575 Delightful and Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal 24hr Eyeshadow in 70 Barely Branded -
This has easily been my most reached-for eye look this past month. It's super easy and goes with absolutely everything! I like to sweep a thin layer of Barely Branded across the whole lid with my finger for a base. Then, I pat the light pink shadow across the top of that and finish with the dark brown shade in the crease and along my bottom lash line. The Color Tattoo helps everything last all day, though it can crease with much extended wear. I have a more comprehensive review of this product here. This Revlon quad is also a nice collection of neutrals but I wish the brown and yellow/gold shades didn't have such chunky glitter in them.

Maybelline the Mega Plush Volum' Express Mascara in Blackest Black and Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner -
I've obviously been quite the fan of Maybelline eye products recently! Firstly, I'll just say that I've only been using Mega Plush Mascara for two days and it instantly ranked in my monthly favourites. I bought it to see if the "gel-mousse formula" would be better and resisting smudging than my beloved the Falsies in Black Drama. It does this and so much more! I will do a more thorough review soon but just know that the wand is huge, the product is clump free, and it separates like a dream!

My relationship with the Master Precise Liquid Liner, though, has been a completely different story! Of course I bought it because of all the hype and praise it's received amongst the beauty community but I was really disappointed when I first tried it for myself. I found the brush way too thin and hard to negotiate evenly over my lash line. I just generally really struggled to make this liner work well for me. That is, until this month when I finally figured out how to use it properly! I don't know what I was doing before but I'm so glad I don't anymore. This liner is now super easy and quick with a lovely black pigmentation. I can understand the love now!

Viktor&Rolf FlowerBomb Eau de Parfum (miniature) and Nivea Visage Pure & Natural Moisturising Day Cream -
This Viktor&Rolf perfume is one of my all time favourite scents but it is so incredibly expensive! Luckily, I have amazing relatives who buy me miniature perfumes for gifts! I've had this mini bottle of FlowerBomb since last year but I've only gotten into using it regularly this past month. It's a very sophisticated, musky-floral scent which I absolutely adore! I love wearing it when going out at night but it also suits day time wear.

I've spoken about this Nivea moisturiser before in my videos but it's made a return in these monthly favourites! It's a thick cream that I use after cleansing on my skin morning and night. It smells really nice and sweet and it leaves my skin feeling softer than any other moisturiser has made it feel before. I really love this product and will probably continue to repurchase it!

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains in 001 Honey and 030 Smitten -
Another product I bought because of the hype! I know I am the last person to talk about these but aren't you glad I finally have? I bought these two in a Priceline sale this past month and have been loving their staining power! I couldn't believe how well these lived up to my expectations after months of people raving all across the internet about them. Honey is a very neutral pink that almost matches my lips' natural colour but adds a nice bit of sparkle. Smitten is a lovely bright fuchsia colour which I've been loving in the colder weather. You can see my full review of these products here.

So, there you go! Those are all the products I've been using a lot of and enjoying in the month of August. A few of them were old favourites but I stumbled across some new and exciting products, as well. Let me know what you think of my doing Favourites posts here instead of in a video from now on. I think this is easier for getting information to you effectively and quickly.

Have you tried some new products and loved them recently? Or did you rediscover something in your collection that you've pulled out again?
